Idiots is a collaborative project by Afke Golsteijn, Ruben Taneja and Floris Bakker. Their background is in fashion, design, handicrafts, and art. Their work reflects their varied education and is a unusual mixture of sculpture, handicraft, jewellery, and taxidermy. The basic idea is that various stuffed animals undergo a transformation. It is difficult not to think about death when looking at stuffed animals, but in this case, the morbid is transformed into something beautiful. In their work, actual animals are combined with material such as glass, silver, textiles, and embroidery. The animals are decorated and adorned. One bird has had a crown placed on its head, and a necklace around its neck. The bird has been placed on a branch made of glass. Another little bird was given a long, stately, hand-embroidered peacock-like tail. The ordinary bird has been metamorphosed into a glamorous star. The decorations are meticulously done, which makes the operations seem both respectful and empathetic. The poetic titles and the combination of material creates an emotional contrast which oscillates between the melancholic and the beautiful.
