Ophelia is ontstaan, zeg maar opnieuw geboren in het Europees Keramisch werkcentrum te ‘sHertogenbosch, kortweg EKWC. Waar Afke en Floris drie maanden hebben mogen werken. De naam is ontleend aan Shakespears Ophelia in het stuk Hamlet.zij is Hamlet’s geliefde en ontneemt zich het leven door haarzelf te overladen met goud in sierraadvorm en het gewicht te gebruiken om weg te zinken in een poel.
Het prachtige schilderij van John Everett Millais wat zich nu in de Tate bevindt.
Maar: ze is ook ontstaan in het moment, geldzorgen en onzekerheid, het nieuws, de groter wordende verdeeldheid tussen arm en rijk. De verscheuring tussen natuur en kapitaal. De macht van de natuur, in fabels is dat toch wel de leeuw, in onze werkelijkheid de economie. Deze zorgen en een leeuwin uit een Belgische dierentuin en de verleiding van verguld keramiek zijn de bouwstenen geweest voor dit beeld.
Ophelia is nog een peuter en zij zal de komende jaren nog opgroeien, tot, tsja dat gaan we nog zien.

Ophelia was created of lets say born again in the EKWC (European Ceramics Centre in ‘sHertogenbosch (NL) Where Afke & Floris had the opportunity to work for three months. The name comes from Shakespeare’s Ophelia, from the play Hamlet. As Hamlets lover she takes here own life by using the weight of gold jewellery to drowns herself in a pond. The beaujpgul painting by John Everett Millais which hangs in the Tate gallery has functioned as a guide. But she has also sprung out of the moment, money worries, uncertainty the news, the bigger getting gap between poor and rich. The rip between nature and capital. The one who has the power in nature is the lion according to fables, in our reality it is the economy. These thought combined with the lion, who came from the Belgian Zoo, and the temptation of gilded ceramics were the foundation of this piece. Ophelia is an infant now, and we’ll see if she wants to grow up in the years to come.
